On Sunday, October 19 at around 9am, thieves disguised as construction workers entered the Louvre and left on scooters around seven minutes later.
The thieves entered a part of the building that was under construction which gave them access to construction vehicles. The thieves used lifts to get to the second floor where French jewels were on exhibit. They used power tools to cut into the displays of the jewelry and take them. After just under 8 minutes they had successfully stolen from the Louvre without even using weapon. They rode away on scooters as their getaway vehicles.
Their goal was to take nine items but in the end they ended up taking eight items. One item, the crown of Empress Eugenie, was found smashed near the museum. The thieves stole over 100 million dollars worth of jewelry.
At first people were upset. Mainly people in France because their main tourist site and where they have all their history got robbed in broad daylight. After a while though, a lot of people thought it was funny with memes, tik toks, and jokes spreading across the internet. Some people even dressed up as the robbers for Halloween. Before the robbers' identities were revealed people were even making up their own ideas of the robbers, for example, one set of fake photos began circulating making the robbers look like models. Perhaps everyone just really wanted another sequel to Ocean's 11?
