History of Halloween

We are nearing the end of spooky season and Halloween is right around the corner! Most people think of Halloween as just that one holiday where everyone acts spooky, but it actually has a very interesting history. It all started back 2000 years ago…
Halloween originated in Europe in what is now modern day Ireland, United Kingdom, and France. The people who lived there were called the Celts, and their new year's day was celebrated on November 1st. This day marked the end of summer and the beginning of harvest time and the harsh, cold winter. The day before the new year, they celebrated Samhain, which they believed was the day that the dead rose from the grave. These spirits were believed to damage crops and cause trouble, but the Celts believed that the ghosts helped predict the future, which was important because of the dark winter ahead of them.
To celebrate the event, the Celts would light huge bonfires and people would sacrifice livestock and crops. During the celebration, they would wear costumes of animals and try to predict other’s futures. After the celebration, they would light their hearths and prepare for the coming winter.
Eventually, the Romans captured all of the Celt’s territory and the celebration of Samhain merged with the roman celebrations. Over the course of time, Samhain turned into All Hallow’s Day. All Hallow’s Day was a day to celebrate the dead, and the celebrations were very much similar to Samhain. The day before All Hallow’s Day became known as All Hallow’s Eve, thus turning into Halloween over the course of hundreds of years.
Now Halloween is celebrated with people dressing up in costumes and going to their neighbor’s doors and saying, “Trick or treat!” Also people dress up their pets and decorate their houses with spooky decorations and sometimes people put inflatables in their yards, spooky themed of course. Halloween has drifted away from the scary, mischievous spirits, but all of the fun and celebration still remain. If you think you celebrate halloween the best, then make sure to send pictures to the middle school newspaper (midknighttimes@paceacademy.org) and make sure to stop by and participate in the costume contest!
